History of Culpeper County
Chartered in 1749, Culpeper County and the Town of Culpeper are named for Lord Thomas Culpeper, the Colonial Governor of Virginia from 1680-1683. That same year, George Washington, at the age of 17, was commissioned to survey and plot the Town and County of Culpeper.
Culpeper has a long and rich history. During the American Revolution, men from Culpeper, Fauquier, and Orange formed the Culpeper Minute Men Battalion. During the Civil War, the location of the railroad in the area made Culpeper an incredibly significant place for supply stations for both the Union and Confederate Troops. The town and surrounding county witnessed more than 100 different battles and skirmishes throughout the Civil War.
In 1987, the Town of Culpeper became a Virginia Street Community. As a result, the town and surrounding area has seen revitalization and growth.
One well-known area attraction is the Culpeper Regional Airport. The Airport hosts the Culpeper Air Fest each year. The Culpeper Air Fest is not only the largest annual event in Culpeper, but also one of the most popular air shows in the east.
Culpeper County Public Schools
Culpeper County Public School Division serves over 8,200 students. The district includes 6 Elementary Schools, 2 Middle Schools, 2 High Schools, and a Career and Technical Center. All the schools within the Culpeper County Public School District are accredited through the Virginia Department of Education.
