History of Loudoun County, Virginia

Originally, the area that is now Loudoun County was included as a part of the 5 million acre Northern Neck of the Virginia Proprietary granted by King Charles II to 7 different noblemen in 1649. Later, that proprietary was divided to form the counties of Westmoreland, Stafford, Prince William, and Fairfax. And in 1757, Fairfax County was divided. The western portion was then named Loudoun for John Campbell, the 4th Earl of Loudoun.

Leesburg is perhaps one of the oldest and most well known towns in Loudoun County. Leesburg has served continuously as the county seat since 1757.

For 2 centuries, Loudoun County was predominantly an agricultural area, with a nearly constant population of approximately 20,000 residents. Following the construction of Dulles International Airport in the 1960’s, the area saw incredible and consistent growth. Road improvements, as well as expansion of nearby Washington D.C., also made Loudoun County a desirable location for commuters.

Over the last 3 decades, Loudoun County has seen its population quadrupled. Recent population estimates indicate that there are over 437,000 residents living in Loudoun. Loudoun County Public Schools

The Loudoun County Public School (LCPS) System, established in 1870, currently supports 61 Elementary Schools, 17 Middle Schools, 18 High Schools, and 2 Educational Centers. In 2022, the school division was named Best in State Employer by Forbes Magazine. The LCPS Division was named Energy Star Partner of the Year in 2022, receiving the Sustained Excellence Award for the 14th year in a row from the U.S. Environmental Protection Act of the the U.S. Department of Energy. The Division has also been named, 15 years in a row, as one of the best communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Last year alone, the graduating class received $78,486,755 in scholarships.

Ashburn Village – Ashburn Village, located in Ashburn, VA is just 30 miles from Washington D.C. and minutes from Dulles International Airport.
