Brief Introduction to Fairfax County

Fairfax County was originally settled by Virginia and Maryland farmers in the early 1700’s. Named for Thomas, the 6th Lord of Fairfax, whose family, in 1742, was granted the land that is now Northern Virginia. The City of Fairfax began as the Town of Providence, established in 1805.

Some other notable historic landmarks found in Fairfax County are George Mason’s Gunston Hall, Woodlawn Historic Site and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House, Colvin Run Mill, and Sully Historic Site. There are also many museums in the area, such as the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of the U.S. Army.

FCPS serves a diverse population of more than 180,000 students who speak more than 200 different languages. The school system includes 38 alternative and non-traditional school programs, 142 elementary schools, 23 middle schools, 28 high schools, 6 secondary schools, and 8 special education schools. FCPS is also on of the largest employers in Virginia with almost 25,000 full-time employees.
