A Brief Guide to Prince William County

Established in 1731, this Virginia County has a long and interesting history. The County was created when the Virginia General Assembly split Stafford County and combined it with a portion of King George County. Named for King George’s 3rd son, Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, it originally included the areas of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, and Loudoun.

Located on the Potomac River, less than 40 miles from Washington, D.C., Prince William County is the second most populated county in Virginia. According to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau population estimates, Prince William is home to nearly 485,000 residents. Popular cities and towns within the County include Woodbridge, Occoquan, Nokesville, Manassas, Haymarket, Gainesville, Dumfries, Dale City, and Bristow. Prince William is also home to the Quantico Marine Corps Base.

There are a number of different “history trails”, such as the Civil War History Trail and the African American History Trail, as well as numerous historic landmarks, battlefield sites, and museums. One of the most notable and popular museums in the area is the National Museum of the Marine Corps, which sits adjacent to the Quantico Marine Corps Base.

The County hosts a variety of events year round and is also home to “Jiffy Lube Live”, a well-known, outdoor amphitheater that seats 25,000 music fans at a time.

Prince William County Public Schools is the second largest school system in the entire state of Virginia.
