A Brief Guide to Spotsylvania County

Spotsylvania County, Virginia is located approximately 60 miles south of Washington D.C. and just over 50 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. According to the most recent U.S. Census population estimates, it is home to over 140,000 residents. It is one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Virginia.

Established in 1721, Spotsylvania County has a rich history, and as a result, features many different historical attractions from both the Colonial and Civil War eras. The Colonial Governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood, the county’s namesake, established ironworks in Germanna in 1725, which are still visible today. Later on, Spotsylvania became known as the “Crossroads of the Civil War”, as it was the location of 4 major Civil War battles (Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Wilderness).

Currently, the County stretches over 400 square miles and is home to countless restaurants, retail and other businesses. Spotsylvania has over 4,400 acres of National Park Service maintained land and the beautiful, 3,000 acre Lake Anna. Lake Anna visitors and residents alike can enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and more! Within the County are also 13 different parks, most notably, the award-winning Patriot Park, which features an outdoor amphitheater.

Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS), which boasts 1 National Blue Ribbon Award School, 3 Purple Star Schools, and 100% Full Accreditation Status, currently has nearly 24,000 students enrolled (Pre-K through 12th grade). SCPS includes 17 different Elementary Schools (Pre-K-5), 7 Middle Schools (6-8), 5 High Schools (9-12), 1 Career & Technical Center, and 2 Alternative Learning Centers. The Public School System in Spotsylvania offers many different opportunities for students including programs such as preschool, JROTC, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Dual Enrollment Course, STEM Academics, Gateway, etc.
